Hot Stone Massage FAQ

How does hot stone massage work?
The heat from the stones warms and relaxes the muscles, which allows the therapist to apply deeper pressure, if desired. The warmth of the hot stones improves circulation and calms the nervous system.

What kind of stones are used?

Rocks from the river are normally used and because they are so smooth they feel comfortable on your back. The stones are usually made of basalt, a rock that is rich in iron, which allows them to retain heat better.

How do you warm the stones?

The stones are immersed in water and heated until they are within a certain temperature range.

Where do you place the stones?

The stones are placed at specific points on the back, in the palms of the hand, or between the toes. We like to place stones on energy centres of the body to re-balance the body and mind.

What conditions is hot stone massage used for?
We find that people like the warmth of the hot stones and say it is comforting. Hot stone massage is suited to people who have muscle tension but prefer a lighter massage. The heat relaxes muscles, allowing the therapist to work the muscles without using heavy pressure. Hot stone massage can lift your spirits and so we recommend it for those with mild depression.

How will the stones feel?
The stones are never rough. They are always flat and smooth. The stones used on the back are about the size of your palm and are flat.

Will the stone burn me?

No. Definitely not. Our therapist always holds the stones first before touching them to your body, which ensures that the temperature will not be too hot. However, everyone has their own comfort range. Be sure to speak up if the stones are too hot for you.

What can I expect during my visit?
Our therapist will begin by applying soothing oil to your back and neck area, which allows the stones to glide smoothly along the muscles. You will lie face down on a specialist bench and our therapist will use the heated stones to massage the back. After the hot stones have relaxed the muscles, our therapist will use her hands to directly massage the skin.
